Art in the Digital World: Property of the public?

Sneha Sikand of Saffronart shares a link about what the future for art looks like

Doha: William Noel, curator at the Walter’s Art Museum, Baltimore, Maryland is generating great curiosity in the digital world, especially after his speech at the 2012 TEDxSummit. Having been involved in digitising the centuries old manuscript, the Archimedes Palimpest, the data is now freely accessible under the creative commons license. People seem to be divided in their opinion about this great leap in gaining complete access to previously restricted materials. Should one be appreciative or sceptical? What about authors and artists and their copyrights? Noel is of the opinion that art institutions should encourage this practice as it will encourage people to contribute and share their research.
